I AM KEVIN creates new waves of excitement in the film industry

Earlier this month, internationally renowned Cornwall-based theatre company Wildworks held a preview for its new film, I AM KEVIN. The well attended event was held in St Austell’s White River Cinema for all who were involved in the project including cast, crew, community members and support teams.

Afterwards cinemagoers celebrated over drinks at St Austell Band Club where all involved were able to reflect, reminisce and enjoy behind the scenes clips which were shown on a big screen.

Following the preview, the film was officially launched, receiving its world premiere on Sunday 9th July in Truro’s Plaza Cinema. It will be screened several times across cinemas in Cornwall until Saturday 29th July.

Since its launch, the film has received strong reviews from film critics at both The Guardian and The Times newspapers. The Guardian penned, ‘There is something here about how stories shape us and form the landscape inside our minds’. The Times describes it as ‘inventively staged (with no shortage of flames) against the backdrop of the sea’.

There are still a few opportunities to see I AM KEVIN on the big screen. The film will be shown at Regal Cinema, Redruth on Thursday 20th July 2023 at 7.30pm, at the Savoy Cinema in Penzance on Thursday 27th July 2023 at 7.30pm and on Saturday 29th July 2023 from 7.30pm at The Poly, Falmouth. Each screening will be followed by an engaging Q&A session with a variation of different cast members, creatives and community.

Captured during its dramatic live performances on Cornwall’s Carlyon Beach during summer 2022 but with added extras, I AM KEVIN is a genre-defying, theatre/film hybrid. Described as ‘dark, humorous, fiery and honest’, it is ultimately a moving story about imagination and grief – about being lost in the dark, and realising you are not alone. Through ‘I AM KEVIN’ the film, cinemagoers will be invited to let their imaginations run wild on a journey of impossibility, joining a young boy on his eventful quest to find the light in the darkness.

Wildworks’ artistic director, Mydd Pharo said, “Both the preview and premiere evenings were just so incredible. It really made me realise what a special thing we have collectively created. I think I’m still in shock after receiving a sea of positive responses! It was so important for us to allow those people who helped make I AM KEVIN possible to experience it and we are so glad that we had the opportunity to do this. We are so deeply grateful to everyone that has helped make this happen.”

I AM KEVIN has been rated 12A by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) meaning it is suitable for children aged 12 and above and possibly under if accompanied by an adult. The film has a duration of 97 minutes followed by an optional Q&A session. Tickets for an adult are priced at £8.50 and £6.80 for seniors. Finding the epic in every day from its base in Cornwall, Wildworks makes theatrical, site-specific experiences and artworks all over the globe. From beaches, clifftops and woodlands to car parks and disused quarries. From derelict department stores to medinas, from refugee camps to castles.
